Trish MS Winter Wonderland Ball

Trish MS Winter Wonderland Ball

Saturday 31 August

Entry to the Trish MS Winter Wonderland Ball was through an igloo designed, built and decorated by Trish’s uncle Graham Easy and her cousin Shirley Harding.  With a Snowman in the Ballroom, skis on columns and signs created by Simon Calton, Australian Opera Props, to places such as Lapland and the North Pole, guests celebrated the last day of Winter and went home in Spring.

Leigh Sales, recently honoured with an AM, led the Ball, for the fourth consecutive year, with expertise and professionalism.

Leigh said, “It was such a pleasure to once again be part of this fantastic event raising money for MS Research.  Sadly, I’m already locked in to a stage show in Perth on the date of next year’s ball but I can’t wait to be back in 2021.  Unless we find a cure for MS before then!”

The Trish MS Research Award this year was awarded to extremely well-deserved winners Sue and Doug Meredith, DMC Digital, who have provided extraordinary personal and professional generosity to the Trish Foundation since 2003 and also significantly contributed in so many other ways.

The Foundation’s Joint Patron, Dr Brendan Nelson AO opened the Ball with a memorable speech and later spoke passionately about the Australian War Memorial experience he donated as a Live Auction Item.  With very strong bidding for this unique, money-can’t-buy experience, Dr Nelson stepped up to the lectern and committed to a second Australian War Memorial experience.  Truly exceptional support which greatly boosted the funds raised for MS Research Projects.

Leigh Sales introduced Trish’s nephew Thomas Langsford on the keyboard, who was joined mid-song by Trish Foundation resident soprano Toni Powell in a surprise performance, which had guests singing along to “Winter Wonderland”, the Ball’s theme song.

Chair of MS Research Australia, Richard Bergman spoke about the Foundation’s contribution to MS Research in Australia, following which Australian comedian Rodney Marks, hoax speaker and Corporate imposter, who was introduced as MIT Professor Cody Mann, 2007 Nobel Laureate in Physiology and Medicine, entertained his audience with clever humour, performing pro bono, as he had at our 2005 Ball at Parliament House.

Honorary Auctioneers Craig Marshall, who has expertly supported the Trish Foundation since inception, and Andrew Mason Sew & Sew Wines both excelled, raising record funds in the Live Auction.

Leigh Sales showcased her formidable skills, interviewing the Foundation’s Joint Patron Barry O’Farrell, Louisa Hope who is living with MS and A/Prof Fabienne Brilot-Turville, a neuroimmunologist Principal Research Fellow at the University of Sydney who heads the Brain Autoimmunity laboratory within Kids Neuroscience Centre at Kids Research at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.  A/Prof Brilot-Turville spoke of an Incubator Grant funded by the Trish MS Research Foundation which she received in 2010 and what that has meant for her career, as well as the remarkable progress she is achieving with her colleague A/Prof Russell Dale.

The Trish MS Winter Wonderland Ball was supported by the Federal Member for Bennelong, Hon John Alexander and Deborah and tennis legend Ken Rosewall and Wilma, who travelled specially from Queensland.  Also in attendance were members of the Foundation’s Scientific Research Committee, Professor Peter Russell and Professor Michael Barnett, as well as some of the world’s most eminent MS scientists, who have achieved some world-first ground-breaking discoveries.

First Prize in the Gala Raffle was Two Economy Class Tickets to anywhere on the Singapore Airlines network and accommodation at Fairmont Singapore, which ensured tickets were greatly in demand, the Gala Raffle raising record funds this year.

Trish’s mother Carol Langsford, Chair of the Trish Foundation, expressed her profound appreciation to everyone who supported the Trish MS Winter Wonderland Ball.

“We are truly blessed to continue to receive far-reaching extremely valued support of the Trish Foundation,” said Foundation Chair Carol Langsford.  “I always comment that we consider it a great honour to raise funds for Australia’s dedicated, hard-working MS scientists.”

“We are incredibly grateful to absolutely everyone who has contributed to the success of our Ball this year and to the funds we have raised for MS Research Projects.  Our Joint Patrons Dr Brendan Nelson and Barry O’Farrell, our Celebrity MC Leigh Sales, our pro bono contributors and performers, our generous Sponsors, Corporate VIP tables, donors, amazing, big-hearted supporters and our valued Team Trish volunteers continue to make a mammoth contribution to the Trish Foundation.  We were thrilled to raise over $200,000 for high quality MS Research Projects, only possible with the extraordinary support and great generosity we were blessed to receive.   We are greatly indebted to each and every person and organisation who has contributed.”
